Incidentally, the editorial staff of the Los Angeles Times today came out against the current Microsoft situation with a major editorial saying, among other things, that it opposes "extending Microsoft's Windows monopoly into new markets".

The editorial staff of the LA Times have been spouting their tired, statist, liberal establishment opinions for years. They've never met a new tax, rule, or regulation that they didn't wholeheartedly endorse. It's a good thing that SoCal readers have the Orange County Register for a refreshing libertarian counterpoint to the Times.

By the way, what is the Libertarian view on the rise and abuse of monopoly power in a formerly free marketplace?

The software market is still free. There is nothing to stop any company from taking on Microsoft. There are plenty of corporations with deep pockets, IBM to name just one, with the wherewithall to do so. Microsoft is a superbly managed company. If its competitors are not, then too bad for them. Libertarians trust the free market to correct itself, including so called "abusive" monopolies. Mandated and regulated monopolies, such as the old AT&T, are a whole nother story.
