Nice points Tony and you wonder why INTC is accorded such a mediocre PE. It has the franchise the R&D and all the elements of MSFT but it sells at 1/3 the PE. Interesting Stuff this stock market.

Tony, No way Jose. Microprocessor chip designs nowadays, like Merced, are as complex as mainframes. Whether Merced is VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word) or EPIC (Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing), (oh, Intel page says EPIC), reverse engineering Merced successfully by another semiconductor company will be about as easy as making a T-Rex from a 70 million year old piece of amber. Well, maybe not quite.

Thanks for the comments. I agree. I just meant to say Intel needs to protect their I.P. from direct competition. I didn't mean a closed system from all the hardware and firmware companies like the old mainframe ideology.
