Metricom Shares Rise 21% as Company Plans to Upgrade Network

Los Gatos, California, July 8 (Bloomberg) -- Metricom Inc. rose 21 percent after the maker of Ricochet brand wireless modems said it will upgrade its network in more than 10 cities to give computer users faster wireless connections to the Internet.

Metricom shares rose 1 1/2 to 8 3/4 in trading of 196,000 shares, almost twice the three-month daily average.

A spokeswoman said the Los Gatos, California-based company, whose wireless network is now accessible in Seattle and several other large cities, will unveil its upgraded wireless Internet technology later this month. Metricom is negotiating with a number of additional cities for the right to install the transmitters on public streetlights, spokeswoman Susan Kohl said.

The new technology will let users connect to the Internet at speeds of up to 128 kilobits per second, twice the speed of the fastest existing telephone-based modems, Kohl said.

Tom
It already happened at the CPUC July 2nd meeting, so this is history:
cpuc.ca.gov
<<CA-27
Res E-3543 - Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E).
This resolution approves PG&E's request for deviation from Schedule
A-1-agreement with Metricom, Inc for unmetered electric service>>

For everyone else, the provision covers 5,300 Metricom pole top radios in the PG&E service area, which could be anywhere from Kern County to the Oregon border. Apparently, it was a non-contested item at the meeting.
No MCOM position yet.
