The information age and the digital age are what will define [imo] the next 10 years. The theme being connectivity and the ability to instantly transmit data, voice, images-- personal 2 way video conferencing/ entertainment ie content games video [large enterprise/SOHO and home]. if you allow me the analogy the systems of connectivity each have their own advantages/ disadvantages. The 3 large categories satellite, and ground based wirefiber/cable and wireless. satellite's are already a significant factor and with the build out of global satellite communication systems this will become more attractive as price and system capabilities become competitive. Ground based wire/fiber/cable will each find a niche. They all offer the same thing. What will differentiate each will be cost/ quality of connection ie speed image quality etc., and availability and the big unknown content.
Cabel modem rollout has been accelerated by T and TCI. The more important factor to me is that in addition to access to the subsriber TCI offers to T.... content. This is nothing new for cable guys but marks a new era for the Telephone companies. How this will shake out is unclear will TCI..T resell their content or be a channel on web?
In the end fiber qwst/iixc companies will provide a low cost alternative to legacy and satellite. Rebocs will get their act together and begin to accelerate x/vdsl deployment or concede large segments of the market to cable for the near term.
Longer term 5-10 years the strengths of each method of connectivity will evole and hence the market segment that they penetrate will become clearer. For now the ATM and fast ethernet solutions are the apparent backbone of newer broadband services. The companies best positioned from where I sit NN SMAWY because of ATM. QWST LVLT and IIXC because of cost of fiber as alternative will replace legacy carriers. TXN and ADI because of their dsp cores that will allow lower cost transmission as the power of their new cores facilitastes low cost connectivity. SSPIF WIND for their dsp solutions capabilities. network management ie CKEYF/TTILF and private Daleen Technology. Who will make the best fiber modems satellite technologies. Cienna LU Fitel/ cable modems/ cmto// com/ mot
TI for ADI for dsp chipsets,
basestation TI/ADI/MOT/
orckit /TI for xdsl /vdsl. afci for local loop carrier //satellite vsat/skyc gstrf/trmbl. by no means is this complete and i am sure i have left out some strong companies.

off topic to pat

not sure if this still qualifies as the weekend but what about jds fitel? if you want to reply perhaps the jds thread would be more appropriate.
