JUL 6, 1998, M2 Communications - Meeting the growing concern over atmospheric disturbances destroying components of computer systems, Telebyte Technology, Inc. (OTCBB-TBTI) has introduced the Model 22-64 Lightning Sponge for use on 64 KPBS communications circuits. This device accommodates lightning strikes and diverts them to a low impedance path to "earth" ground before they can damage network equipment and computers. A transient caused by a direct strike of lightning or by induced ground currents in the vicinity of data lines can produce a leading edge wavefront that rises at the rate of approximately 1,000 volts per microsecond. This necessitates fast action and the ability to service large voltages. The Model 22-64 is designed to accept these transients, slow them down, limit them and redirect them to a low impedance path to earth ground. The protection scheme utilized incorporates three separate stages of limiting high voltage transients. The first stage of protection is gas tubes which are capable of accommodating 1,000 amps. This is followed by two stages of semiconductor avalanche diodes. The output voltage is limited to + or - 18 volts. The DC series resistance of each protection circuit is maintained at approximately 5 ohms and the response time is measured in nanoseconds. The Model 22-64 includes four circuits and is therefore useable on any 4-wire communications circuit whose data rate does not exceed 64 KBPS. For typical applications such as protecting short haul modems, a Model 22-64 should be installed on each end of the 4-wire transmission line. The Model 22-64 provides 4-wire screw terminals on either end for terminating the 4-wire lines. The Model 22P-64 provides modular RJ-11 type phone jacks for easy installation of the 4-wire lines. For both models, an additional screw terminal is provided to make the connection to earth ground. This ground connection should be a wire of at least #14 gauge or larger and be as short as possible. It will conduct the surge to earth ground, i.e., power ground or water pipe. The Model 22-64 is packaged in a small aluminum enclosure whose size is 4 1/2" W x 13/4" D x 11/2" H. Considering its size and cost, the Lightning Sponge is low cost insurance for those systems susceptible to damage from atmospheric or other high voltage disturbances. In single quantity the Model 22-64 or 22P-64 sells for $72.00 while in quantities of 100 it can be purchased for $57.60 each. The Model 22-64 is available from Telebyte or any of its worldwide network of distributors.
