GP, GM,

So we will still have those funky channel designers around after all? <G> Question: is there any competition to ARM's approach? What will TDK do? Surely they won't stand by and let Cirrus take a lead.

Best,
Stitch

GM,

I believe write precomp is an analog function. The main digital functions of the channel (the Viterbi detector, the path memory, and the encoder/decoder) won't very easily be taken on by a processor core. However, I noticed the press release mentioned that ARM is wanting to add DSP capability to their processor. This could possibly be used to do the filtering function of the channel. Some companies do filtering for the channel in digital and some in analog.
