Here's the Disney press release from Yahoo! Finance. Wednesday June 24, 9:42 pm Eastern Time Disney hopes families will "dig" the Internet PALO ALTO, Calif., June 24 (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co. (DIS - news) Wednesday unveiled a new family Web site that helps children and their parents find more of the material they are looking for on the World Wide Web. Now, instead of searching or surfing the Internet, they can dig in it. The new Disney site, Called Disney Internet Guide, or DIG (www.dig.com), was designed to enhance the online experience of children and their parents. In place of grown-up subjects like government, news, business and economy, it allows users to look for information under such topics as animals, comics, games and toys. What it will not do, Disney says, is steer users exclusively to Disney-owned products and services. ''You won't get the impression that all we want to you to is go to Disney world,'' said Disney Online President Richard Wolpert. ''If we really want to be a gateway to the Internet, we have to include other people's stuff too.'' He said that less than one half of one percent of the content on the site is Disney related. The new Web site is the second big Internet announcement in less than a week from Disney, which last Thursday bought a 43 percent stake in the online service Infoseek Corp. (SEEK - news). However, Disney did not select Infoseek to deliver the search services for the new DIG Web site. For that, Disney has turned to Inktomi Corp. (INKT - news), whose advanced Web crawling technology has rapidly made it the search engine of choice for Internet providers. ''We made a lot of plans for this a year ago, before we had this deal with Infoseek,'' said Wolpert. ''Inktomi was chosen for its underlying search technology. Conceivably, if we had started planning (DIG) today, we could have chosen Infoseek.'' DIG will be connected to Infoseek insofar as it will serve as the kid's directory on Infoseek's Web site.
