Extreme - pure Gig/FE Ethernet layer 2/3 switch player, great hardware, good software, weak layer 3 offering. great edge device price. Great partnership, great marketing.
Packet Engine - pure Gig/FE Ethernet layer 2/3 switch player. One of the earliest to jump into Gig/Layer 3 switching (i.e. ASIC routing) market. A lot of noise, no real product yet.
Pluris - second tier startup.
Foundry - Gig/FE Ethernet layer 2/3 switch player + web server switching, OK hardware, great software, great depth of products, weak marketing, no sale channel, all direct. CEO is known for his temper. Suppose coming out with great, second generation hardware in one to two months.
Alteon - Gig server switch and Gig adapters. Revenue mainly from Gig adapter, COMS is OEM adapter from Alteon, COMS is also investor of Extreme. COMS already has products competing with Extreme. Interesting to see when COMS offers its own Gig adapter.
Berkeley - Very different and risky strategy. MSFT NT routing as control protocol and management platform. Its own ASIC route switching. I have hard time to image MSFT in any urgent to fix any bugs in protocols found by Berkeley's customer.
ArrowPoint - Content (URL based) smart switching. Product includes everything - switch, routing, firewall, LAN/WAN connectivity, web distributing protocol. CEO is a tech. guru and had two successful startup before, but selling this complicated product may be diffcult.
