it is not unreasonable to believe that he was not interested in being #2

Not unreasonable. But as you also point out, the timing indicates some kind of tension or stand-off, rather than an orderly transition of something that had always been understood.

But I really feel it is time for someone to advise Mr Yocam against too many items such as this:

lantimes.com

History is being gently rewritten - the Open Environment acquisition pre-dated Del's arrival, yet he includes it as part of "his" move up the food chain strategy. Also - as seems to be Inprise policy - he highlights the growth of "enterprise sales" without supporting detail; one begins to suspect that a sale could be deemed "enterprise" more or less at will.

And from the "we don't need nobody's help" department: "We got hit with Japan and the Pacific because most of that business is done through partners and low-end retail distribution." Hmmm. There goes the channel, not wanted on voyage. He'd better be right - rebuilding a loyal and supportive channel takes a long long time.

But the most fascinating of all was the statement "We have to be 12 to 18 months ahead of the competition", almost as if he believes Inprise already is that far ahead. I'd love to see the justification of that one.

RE: Sippl

I don't follow this thread any more, but thought I would pass this little piece of news about Sippl on:

biz.yahoo.com

Perhaps there was a bit of a conflict of interests?
