the short-seller
hopes never to cover thereby avoiding paying any capital gains taxes

Is that true. Are you suggesting that if the co. goes belly up, the money you received for short selling is NOT TAXABLE ?

Is the same true of selling puts that are not exercised ?

I am kicking myself for not going long this stock last year. It was one of those
situations where the glaringly obvious was right in front of my nose but for some odd
reason, I did the stooopid thing and missed the opportunity.

I know the feeling. For the past 4 years I have been telling everyone that INTERNET is the biz of the future and that it will be bigger that the PC biz and that one should buy all the internet stocks when they go public. Guess what. I bot and sold for a measly profit. And gave up all the big bucks. Now i am wiser but so is everyone else. and more so. I missed the boat again and dont knwo what the next revolutionary biz is going to be or if there will be one in my lifetime.

Of course I have my eye on comm. cos. like IRIDF and GSTRF. Will I buy and hold these ?? Who the hell knows. I dont have patience and will probably not hold and then curse myself for missing yet another opp.
