Rudedog, <<Can you give me the URL? I could not find this on Compaq's web site.>> The link is in the message you responded to. Did you skip the rest of the message. Here again: compaq.com It is one of the models that listed that problem among others. <<As a friend of mine often says, 'here's another guy who doesn't know s**t!'. ... As far as the text of the message from 'billy', the original poster - people like him give me a headache.>> See my previous response to John regarding these agreements and what is reasonable to support. (I mentioned that this guy doesn't sound right when he said it is "illegal". Your clarification on this is great. He might or might not work for Compaq and uses a fake name for Internet posting and doesn't know the Compaq's policy very well. He is possibly to be a support person who isn't well trained or just plain stupid. I have been serviced by some of them. Particularly here for Windows 98, if I bought a retail version of Windows 98 upgrade other than that from Compaq and install it on my Compaq machine, and if it has some problems due the peculiarity of the hardware or Compaq's custom software other than Windows itself or even caused by integration of both, I would like Compaq to listen to my problem and see if they already know the answer and give me that answer, instead telling me going away. For example, that Phone Center problem, Compaq already has an solution to it. If I got that blue screen, a sympathetic support person should help me with the known answer. I am not saying Compaq isn't doing this for sure. This is for the argument against that you absolutely should not support a software not released by you. Windows 98 software sold by Microsoft as a standard operation system should be among the exceptions, especially when the problem is or potentially is caused by the interaction between Compaq products and Windows. I agree you should not support just any games downloaded or something like that. If the ratings of Compaq's quality of support and products has been rising instead of falling as compared to its competitors that customers may turn to, I would not have worried. (If this is a forum is a place for shopping customers, I probably should not mention those choices here and keep my mouth. Shhhh ... )
