'Is there one sector that particularly worries you?

The thing that scares me the most is the problem of the so-called "embedded chips." They control the utility companies, the flow of gas, the distribution of electricity.

There are literally millions of these embedded chips out there, especially in remote and rural areas, such as the Oklahoma Panhandle.

'But the Year 2000 Problem is bigger than just computers. Many devices containing computer chips, ranging from elevators to building temperature control systems to medical equipment, also may be affected. Called "embedded systems," these computer chips must be checked to see whether they are sensitive to calendar dates.

"We've identified about 25,000 pieces of equipment that may have the Year 2000 date issue," said Bill MacNally, computer systems vice president at Allina Health Systems in Minnetonka. "Each piece of equipment needs to be evaluated for impact -- whether it could affect someone's life." It's a big job, and he expects to spend about $50 million to check software, computers and devices that contain computer chips.

Non-Information Technology (IT)-related systems
This serves as a clearinghouse for information regarding various non-IT control systems that depend on computer clocks or date calculation in their operation. These include fire detection, HVAC, traffic controls, security and environmental control systems. This does not include personal computers, servers, mainframes and other IT-related systems.
