To clarify my view of Amazon's business, let me add that I don't think that mail-order
books is necesarily a bad idea. In fact, all forms of mail-order, whether via phone or
internet, is a most welcome alternative to people of all stripes:

I could not agree with you more. Mail order has had a market for years. It is a great medium for many for commodity items. It can be profitable when competition becomes livable. Those with the deep pockets will survive or those with unique commodity items. I know unique commodity items sounds like an oxymoron but it is not. Customized mail boxes, customized tee-shirts, etc. can be unique commodities.
