This 300,000 number Microsoft is throwing around is pure BS. On the flip side, it's a brilliantly crafted hype event.

I was there for this "midnight madness" thing at InCOMPetent USA, and believe you me, these people weren't there to buy Win 98. InCOMPetent USA was giving away Celeron machines for $98 and all sorts of little freebies. THAT'S why people came out. Microsoft can then say "300,000 people showed up for the launch of Win 98" and notice they carefully avoid saying 300,000 copies WERE SOLD -- because, well, that would be lying. <g>
