I use Q98 too. Just enter a sell transaction as if you already owned it. The program then prompts you before it enters in the register: "Recording a short transaction?" Click yes. And then your portfolio shows negative shares. Unless you already own shares and the program thinks you're selling those. But then why would you do that anyway.

If it still doesn't work, do you update your quicken portfolio via the internet. It's possible there was a bug in the early versions that Intuit worked out. Try updating the software online, through the menu "Online" then "Update Quicken 98".
