im apparently not going to be popular here but i still say we are not to far off.
drug use and drug related crimes did decrease, and substantially, during the mid to late 80's. im not going to get into skewed statistics and such, they are very much as skewed now as they were then on everything from gdp to unemployment figures to homelessness to everything else govt. run. / dont believe me take a look at how they are proposing to do the next census....talk about unconstitutional.
ok droogies.... your first two reasons for supporting legalization are because of savagely increased tax receipts and the ease of monitoring people who abuse drugs. i shouldnt even respond to this, i should just let the libertarian group handle this one, the hypocrisy is clear, unless you do not claim to be part of the libertarian persuasion and are only here to do defend this particular issue, which is fine, its exactly what im doing. but do you follow the libertarian line or not, its pretty evident increasing tax receipts to this magnitude creates a much more powerful, influential, and overburdensome govt. my hope here is we can all agree that our money is what gives the govt there power, ill assume no one will argue with the obvious. as far as govt using those extra treasury receipts solely for education and treatment. yeah, much like the ny lottery is used solely for education, like ss taxes are used strictly for people in retirement, like even 1/3 of medicare taxes ultimately are used for medical purposes, oh and heres a good one, like all the funds set aside for welfare go to welfare. sure droogies, and which govt dept would you like to oversee this new overflow of monies into the treasury, fda, commerce, epa or should we create a whole new beauracracy for this. as far as 'the increased ability to monitor hard core abusers'.....say with video cameras or dog tags or ?????? sure the founding fathers would be proud of this, how about prison, be real easy to monitor them there. yes, prison, what a novel thought. clearly everyone here is capable of drawing the parallel between drug use and crime, they are hand in hand. 'anyone who is opposed to legalized drugs has merely to look at prohibition' . im opposed and i dont find prohibition all that great of an anology, different times, different situation all together. some similarities obviously can be drawn but over all i cant make a serious connection. if this is the libertarian line on this issue, it has all the appearances on preaching conservatism while practicing liberalism, the theory smacks of "if it feels good, do it" sixties nonsense which is very largely responsible for why we are where we are today. one more thing, if we collectively decide to legalize drugs, i sure hope its not my tax dollars going into your self annointed education and rehab fund. if its legal and people self destruct, dont look for me to put up the cash, dont look for my sympathy, and stay away from my wallet. of course, it would be me paying. poet the hard conservative, not done here, but just as soon find a new subject to debate.... confiscatory taxation, tree hugging environmental anti capitalist types, private property, guns, social security, etc. etc.
