New Family of Metastor Intelligent Storage Hubs Simplifies
Storage Management - BW, 08:09 a.m. Sep 28, 1998 Eastern

Advanced features of new network-attached storage systems minimize
overhead and maximize throughput and availability ensuring easy
management for network administrators

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 28, 1998--
LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE:LSI) today announced availability of its next
generation MetaStor(TM) network-attached storage systems.

The new generation MetaStor intelligent storage hub family is built on the product
line's strong foundation of scalable capacity, performance and availability. New
features of the MetaStor intelligent storage hub family include: integrated, high
performance advanced intelligent tape (AIT) library for simple, fast backup and
recovery; web-based graphical-user interface (GUI) for easy
installation/administration; and multi-protocol support for transparent data sharing.
These features translate to worry-free storage management for network administrators.

"With the growth of NT networks, system administrators must manage storage within
a heterogeneous environment," said Tom Georgens, president for LSI Logic Storage
Systems, Inc. "This is compounded by users' ever-growing demand for more storage
capacity and guaranteed access to their files. To address this critical need, our new
storage systems simplify network storage management from set up to backup, while
maintaining a high level of availability."

"Our business depends on 24 x 7 data availability and unbeatable performance when it
comes to accessing and sharing information--that's why we chose the MetaStor
intelligent storage hub to store our mission-critical data," said Alan Chung, president
of Digiweb, a web-hosting solutions provider with 15,000 sites from over 100
countries. "By keeping data online with a dual-active, redundant I/O path, our
information is available--without interruption. When you're in the business of hosting
web sites and keeping your clients' web servers up and running 24-hours a day, you
need a storage system that you can rely on. Without a doubt, MetaStor intelligent
storage hubs provide the scalable capacity, performance and high level of availability
we need."

Users want to be assured that their data is safe and properly backed up and network
administrators want this to happen quickly without downtime. The new integrated AIT
library offers simple menu-based backup/restore administration and fast backup at up
to 500 GB in eight hours. With capacity up to 1 TB (2.6 TB compressed),
incremental, partial or full backups can be scheduled anytime of the day without
interruption to the users. The new intelligent storage hub allows network
administrators to take a snapshot of the file system at anytime so that files can be
recovered in case of an unexpected error. The snapshot capability can also be
combined with the integrated backup feature so that reading and writing data continues
even during the backup process.

In addition, the MetaStor intelligent storage hub family provides flexible management
through a robust operating environment called JetWorks(TM) Plus. This powerful,
web-based GUI allows network administrators to configure and manage the intelligent
storage hub configuration, the network connections, and the storage and backup, all
from a single intuitive, user-friendly interface. With the JetWorks Plus operating
environment, installation of an intelligent storage hub occurs in about 20 minutes.
Once installed, remote management can be accessed via the web from any location. In
addition, the software features NIS+ (Network Information Service) to consolidate
and share password configuration data and DNS (Domain Name Service) to
automatically translate network node names into Internet Protocol addresses. Lastly,
the JetWorks Plus operating environment offers security features that allow
administrators to configure for security options such as read/write protection and
log-in authentication.

The new MetaStor intelligent storage hub family also provides transparent data sharing
with multi-protocol support for NFS, SMB/CIFS, NetWare(R) and AppleTalk(R).
This facilitates information sharing within groups or across the enterprise and
simplifies management of heterogeneous networks--saving the network administrator
time and trouble.

The new MetaStor intelligent storage hub family includes the SH850, with up to 180
GB for workgroup environments; the SH7000 for department configurations up to
over a terabyte; and the SH7400 with dual-active I/O paths and automatic failover and

MetaStor Solutions Ease Storage Management and Administration With
New SYMplicity Storage Manager Plus Software
BW, 08:14 a.m. Oct 20, 1998 Eastern

Easy-to-Use Storage Management Software Guarantees High Availability
and Performance Saving System Administrators Time and Money

ATLANTA, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 20, 1998--
LSI Logic Storage Systems Inc. (NYSE:LSI) today announced the new SYMplicity(tm)
Storage Manager Plus software, an integral component to the company's MetaStor(tm)
family of scalable enterprise storage solutions.

The SYMplicity Plus software ensures uninterrupted data access and maximum
performance, combining a redundant disk array controller (RDAC) driver, full dual I/O
path design, and powerful on-line technical support. The result is a simple, transparent,
fail-safe approach to storage management that saves administrators both time and money.

Key features in the new SYMplicity Storage Manager Plus software support the high
performance capabilities of the MetaStor S-Class server-attached storage family
(announced in related release today). With Dynamic Capacity Expansion, system
administrators are able to add capacity without any impact to data access. The software
also features Dynamic RAID Level Migration which easily tunes the RAID levels for
optimal performance. And Dynamic Segment Sizing tunes the segment size for maximum
performance and stripe utilization while maintaining continuous data availability.

"The new SYMplicity Storage Manager software is a reliable, secure, completely
transparent way for system administrators to manage RAID systems and keep data paths
open," said Bill Reed, managing director of MetaStor Solutions. "SYMplicity software
shields you from much of the complexity of RAID management while safeguarding your
data paths. Now your data can always be accessible, even in the event of catastrophic
component failures along your I/O paths. It is unique in simplified storage management
and guaranteed availability."

Available with every RAID storage system from the MetaStor scalable family, the open
and flexible SYMplicity Storage Manager Plus software supports Solaris(tm),
HP-UX(tm), and Windows NT(R). It is also available in a networked, host-independent
version with broad interoperability across a variety of operating systems and single-point
management capabilities.

The new SYMplicity Storage Manager Plus software features a variety of important
enhancements, including:

Feature Benefit

Dynamic Capacity Expansion Adds capacity without impact to data
access

Dynamic Segment Size Migration Tunes segment size for performance
and stripe utilization without impact
to data access

Dynamic RAID Level Migration Tunes RAID level for performance
without impact to data access

Dynamic defragmentation Maximizes unused capacity

Performance Monitor Provides I/O bandwidth and cache
utilization statistics allowing
performance tuning

Autocode synchronization Automatically updates firmware level
of a replaced controller to the
existing controller

Enterprise cache dump Offers high-availability protection
of controller cache and system cache

In mission-critical environments such as I/O intensive data warehousing and on-line
transaction processing, system administrators need uninterrupted access to data.
SYMplicity Plus software simplifies the system administrator's job by intelligently and
transparently managing all redundant RAID components, including controllers, host
adapters, disk drives and cables.

The software supports a host-based redundant disk array controller driver implementation
that automatically reroutes the data to the other active controller in the event that one fails
-- without user intervention. The system administrator is then immediately notified so the
failed controller can be replaced online. The same is true if a host adapter, disk drive,
interface cable or other subsystem component fails -- the software automatically recovers
and immediately notifies the administrator. Data integrity and accessibility are maintained
without lost time or money.

SYMplicity Plus software's unique ease-of-use features include Recovery Guru, Health
Check, and a powerful graphical user interface (GUI). The Recovery Guru is an
intelligent, on-line guide that pinpoints the source of any issues in the storage system,
then provides a step-by-step recovery procedure. The Health Check monitors and
determines the condition of the RAID modules and provides detailed reports as requested.
The GUI simplifies every aspect of configuring logical units on a RAID system and
includes on-screen information about configuration, status, maintenance and recovery.

SYMplicity Storage Manager Plus software supports simple network management
protocol (SNMP) error notification to enable RAID management from the same
workstation used for other network devices. It can also be scripted to support multiple
notification methods, such as a pager or cellular phone.
