LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE:LSI) today announced availability of its next
generation MetaStor(TM) network-attached storage systems.
The new generation MetaStor intelligent storage hub family is built on the product
line's strong foundation of scalable capacity, performance and availability. New
features of the MetaStor intelligent storage hub family include: integrated, high
performance advanced intelligent tape (AIT) library for simple, fast backup and
recovery; web-based graphical-user interface (GUI) for easy
installation/administration; and multi-protocol support for transparent data sharing.
These features translate to worry-free storage management for network administrators.

Users want to be assured that their data is safe and properly backed up and network
administrators want this to happen quickly without downtime. The new integrated AIT
library offers simple menu-based backup/restore administration and fast backup at up
to 500 GB in eight hours. With capacity up to 1 TB (2.6 TB compressed),
incremental, partial or full backups can be scheduled anytime of the day without
interruption to the users. The new intelligent storage hub allows network
administrators to take a snapshot of the file system at anytime so that files can be
recovered in case of an unexpected error. The snapshot capability can also be
combined with the integrated backup feature so that reading and writing data continues
even during the backup process.
In addition, the MetaStor intelligent storage hub family provides flexible management
through a robust operating environment called JetWorks(TM) Plus. This powerful,
web-based GUI allows network administrators to configure and manage the intelligent
storage hub configuration, the network connections, and the storage and backup, all
from a single intuitive, user-friendly interface. With the JetWorks Plus operating
environment, installation of an intelligent storage hub occurs in about 20 minutes.
Once installed, remote management can be accessed via the web from any location. In
addition, the software features NIS+ (Network Information Service) to consolidate
and share password configuration data and DNS (Domain Name Service) to
automatically translate network node names into Internet Protocol addresses. Lastly,
the JetWorks Plus operating environment offers security features that allow
administrators to configure for security options such as read/write protection and
log-in authentication.
The new MetaStor intelligent storage hub family also provides transparent data sharing
with multi-protocol support for NFS, SMB/CIFS, NetWare(R) and AppleTalk(R).
This facilitates information sharing within groups or across the enterprise and
simplifies management of heterogeneous networks--saving the network administrator
time and trouble.
The new MetaStor intelligent storage hub family includes the SH850, with up to 180
GB for workgroup environments; the SH7000 for department configurations up to
over a terabyte; and the SH7400 with dual-active I/O paths and automatic failover and
restore for data centers where the highest availability is needed for multi-terabytes of
storage.
LSI Logic is marketing the MetaStor family of intelligent storage hubs exclusively
through VARs, system integrators, and international distributors. Target applications
include CAD/CAM, CASE, data warehousing, enterprise resource planning, on-line
transaction processing, and imaging.
The fully configured SH7400 system targeted at the high-end enterprise with
100-400+ users is priced at $400,000 or $.37/MB (suggested U.S. retail price)
including 1.08 TB of disk storage, 512 MB of communication cache, 512 MB of
storage cache, an integrated AIT library, and a 10/100 base T Ethernet card.
The fully configured SH7000 system targeted at the mid-range workgroup to
enterprise with 50-200 users is priced at $350,000 or $.28/MB (suggested U.S. retail
price) including 1.26 TB of disk storage, 256 MB of communication cache, 256 MB
of storage cache, an integrated AIT library, and a 10/100 base T Ethernet card.
The fully-configured SH850 workgroup system, ideal for 10-100 users is priced at
$70,000 or $.39/MB (suggested U.S. retail price) including 180 GB of disk storage,
256 MB of communication cache, 64 MB of storage cache, and a 10/100 base T
