06/29 02:58 UAE approves controlled sales of Viagra, MUSE

DUBAI, June 29 (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates has approved the sale of
Viagra, but has said it will only be dispensed on prescription from certain doctors.

UAE newspapers said on Monday the Ministry of Health would supervise the sale of
the anti-impotence drug after a Sunday decision by the ministry's Supreme Committee
for Drug Registration.

The daily Gulf News said the drug was expected to go on sale in the country by the
end of the year or early next year.

The UAE has said it was testing Viagra and was studying ways to dispense it.

Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul-Aziz bin Baz last week said that Moslems
may use the drug if it did not contain any intoxicating materials and if it did not harm
health.

Saudi newspapers have said the drug was fetching as much as $80 a pill on the
kingdom's black market.

Viagra is made by Pfizer Inc <PFE.N>.

VIVUS Inc's <VVUS.O> impotence product MUSE also won the ministry's
approval, the papers said.
