Comparing 3Com to Yahoo! Inc...well you know...

Yahoo! shares scorched their way to a 52-week high last week of 156 ¬ before dropping back to 148 11/16 Friday. Most of the gain was attributed to an incredibly high number of short sellers who had to eat their words and buy shares as the price continued to rise.

Yahoo! short shares increased to 5.7 million shares in June from 5.2 million in May. June float, or shares in circulation, was 9.9 million, according to Nasdaq. However, Yahoo!'s shorting wasn't as high as in April, when 6.4 million shares were shorted.

But consider this: Yahoo! closed Friday with a ridiculous market capitalization of $6.88 billion. 3Com Corp. (COMS), for example, has a market cap of $10.8 billion. In the last four fiscal quarters, Yahoo! has reported sales of $87 million compared to $5.94 billion for 3Com.

Unless there are ton more Internet pessimists out there holding short tickets, Yahoo! seems destined for a big drop this week.
