Oracle Optimizes Industry-Leading Oracle8 Database for Intel's Pentium II Xeon Processor; Customers to Benefit from Dramatic Performance Advances June 29, 1998 12:30 PM REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Oracle Corp. ORCL , working closely with Intel Corporation, has optimized the performance of its flagship database server Oracle8(TM) on Intel's new Pentium(r) II Xeon(TM) processor for servers to deliver dramatically enhanced performance of up to 300 percent. Leveraging its expertise and leadership position in the database industry, Oracle will be one of the first database servers to be fully optimized for the 36-bit addressing capabilities of Intel's new processor. Intel's Pentium II Xeon processor also includes the new Intel Extended Server Memory Architecture, a 36-bit memory addressing technologies (PSE-36) in the processor, cache and chip set, with headroom for up to 64GB of main memory support. This technology provides a fundamental performance and system throughput benefit to Oracle8 by providing the ability to cache large portions of data in main memory instead of moving that data to and from the disk subsystem. Oracle's preliminary benchmarks indicate between a 2- to 4-fold performance gain when memory size is increased from 4 GB to 8 GB for certain business queries. For more than a decade, Oracle has pioneered breakthroughs in database server technology that have fully utilized emerging hardware technologies to deliver enhanced performance and greater economy to customers. * In 1989 Oracle introduced the first clustered database technology. * In 1995 Oracle was the first database to exploit 64-bit UNIX hardware. * In 1997 Oracle was the first database to exploit Very Large Memory Implementations on Windows NT. Oracle8, the Database for Network Computing(TM), manages large amounts of information securely, reliably and economically over computer networks. Oracle8 is a versatile information platform that enables high-speed transactions, better business decisions and sophisticated object-relational applications. Built on a foundation of proven technology, Oracle8 is designed to lower an organization's computing costs, manage all types of data and deliver faster information access to all kinds of users. Oracle8 was selected as the Best Database for 1997 by InfoWorld Magazine. SOURCE Oracle Corporation
