Nevin, I agree with all that you said. Furthermore, our export consists of much more "brain power" than "Brawn power", the latter has much higher value added as well. In order to increase the standard of leaving in the Asian countries, they have to adopt "industrial renovation" principles, which in essence accept the fact of life that in a technological society a very large segment of GDP are products that did not exist 20 years ago. To get to this state, one needs a vibrant venture infrastructure to provide all these bright kids the financial tools to get their dreams on the economic map. This is one of the major shortcomings in the economies of those countries. The wealth is centralized in large and "stodgy" organizations that do not have the flexibility nor the inclination to let the market dictate where the next "killer innovation" will come from.

<< This in turn, will create larger markets for U.S. companies selling everything from computers and software to Boeing 737s. >>

<< We import lower value-added goods from the far east and export higher value-added goods, like aircraft and advanced telecommunications gear, which employ highly skilled and well paid workers. >>

Its my understanding that much of the Boeing products are manufactured in Japan. I think only the wings are specifically not outsourced, I could be wrong. But certainly the fuselage and a lot of its internal refinements and accoutrements are manufactured and assembled internationally.
