Haha indeed. Yes, $500BB is a lot of money. I'm guessing the full extent dollar-denominated debt by Pacific Rim govt's and investors must exceed $2 trillion -- there was $300 BB in private purchases of US Treasury notes in March-May. IMHO, dumping the entire amount in a three-month period would put the Dow Jones somewhere in the 6000 range. This isn't going to happen, but it gives you pause.

Korea is doing exactly what I predicted for Japan. Today it closed 5 rather small banks (7% of the Korean financial market) , announced the liquidation of 7 more, and has another 50 or so on its "hit list". There is a lot of social unrest over this -- employees are sabotaging the efforts, but Korea is holding firm and prosecuting them. They have hypothecated $12BB of the IMF funds to cover bad loans and ease the transition.

I imagine some of this $12BB will find its way into capital expenditures, ultimately. This bears close watching for anyone interested in semi equipment stocks.

Folks, we have to reassess the situation every day. I don't want to color my perception of the Japanese reaction with preconceptions, positive or negative, and hard news is going to be sketchy and after-the-fact. We will see what they do in the next few weeks.
