Don't forget that Marx's "from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs" is the VIA POSITIVA of John Smith's famous quote (VIA NEGATIVA) "If you don't work, you don't eat." Thing is, which would you rather listen to? Which would motivate you more? I'd rather hear Marx. Smith would motivate me. That's the difference. We like the sound of Marx, we are MOTIVATED by the sound of Smith. VAT - Retail tax, whatever...sounds good to me.
