akmike, For this industry, you are using very old data. 1997 is long gone and 1998 has not been pretty so far. Also, remember the cannibalization of standard cell in the gate array market. For example, LSI's growth in standard cell was large but they fell off dramatically in gate array resulting in almost no growth for the year 1997. I believe this deal will lower the overall growth of LSI because the symbios business will grow much slower than communications and digital consumer. This will only change if LSI can come up with some new products and take market share in symbios's segments and this will take time IMO
