Hal, what you and many should do right now, is begin marketing products with the phrase Internet Explorer... hundreds of them, since its free verse, lets test if MSFT truly believes its own generic defense

Anyone want to add to my poor list, how about..

1. Internet Explorer.. the under water fishermans' periscope

2. Internet Explorer.. a branch of the Boy and Girl Scouts of America

3. Internet Explorer..

4. Internet Explorer..

This all gets me thinking... what would really be interesting would be if Sun were to give away their server software for free, kind of the way MSFT and NSCP do with internet browsers. Maybe Sun could gain the low end by giving their OS away. Sun would need to live off of tech support revenues and cash during that time.

What if MSFT then followed suit and the OS and apps all became free?

At some point would one company dominate then try to charge for software again? Would the price of software then skyrocket or would piracy become rampant?

Could a company make money solely through technical support while giving the software away for free?

Red Hat does all right. How about Caldera?... out of the mainstream admittedly but...

for chissakes... you got umpteen billion dollars in the bank... give the founder of SyNet $10 million and forget the whole thing... what is it with these lawyer-driven companies?... always such cheapskates.

Obvious solutions to using the name "Internet Explorer"
Hire Rana away from Netscape to be a Msft employee, with accompanying agreements re IE or
Pay him for the name.
Going to court is just plain silly.
