I am hardly an expert on Jesus, nor do I pretend to be. I cant quote and pull relevant verse like most of you here can. My experience of christianity is confined to attending church services with family and friends(my wife was raised Lutheran, and her family still is Lutheran) and discussion of religion with christian friends, and what I have heard at Unitarian services.(I am a Unitarian Universalist)

The impression I have always gotten of jesus is one of a compassionate God who left an outstreched hand to everyone, including but not limited to prostitutes and sinners.

What I was disagreeing with, was not your statement that the only path to heaven was through Jesus. Most Every christian believes that. (with the notable exception of Mother thearesa). I was disagreeing that the assertion of redemption only through jesus, supports intolerance. It does not.

Having a belief system is a wonderful thing(All religions are only belief systems at their core.) but the words you attest came from jesus do not make a case for intolerant behavior. Remember most christians can not agree on wheather to take his words literally or not. Tolerance for other groups should always be afforded, when there is still massive disagreement on how to proceed internally. It is intolerance and not some deficit of christianity, that causes christians to go to war with different christian sects.

The religion of christianity, I am sure you will agree, does not have some hiden ugliness that causes christians to kill christians. It is intolerance and inflexible minds that cause the killing.

Jesus words were about Love and redemption. They were about bringing people together and not separation. There is great beauty in that. The ugliness comes from the intentional twisting of words and purposefully incorrect interpretation that leads to intolerance and hatred.
