Charles,

Thanks for the reasonable and well-thought response. I would love to see firearms training as an optional course in all public middle and high schools. End of the course, you get the right to buy, keep, and carry a gun. A "well-regulated militia" should be exactly that. (Thought just popped into my head, probably has numerous flaws).

Local situation is stabilizing - Supreme Court just announced that they'll review the case and decide. That gives somebody a face-saving out. I don't think either side really wants to do it, but they're too macho to back down. I was looking forward to going home today, packing up the family and proceeding to the beach somewhere up the coast for a few days while the loonies ruled. Now I have to keep working, unless someone does something dumb, which is never impossible. I've been in this country on and off since '79, through a guerilla war, a revolution, 3 coups d'etat and numerous minor confrontations, and I wish they would stop. Really very pleasant most of the time, but...

Makes me appreciate the US a little better, even the old government. Also makes me a little leery of extremism in any cause. I've seen a little too much of where it leads. Informed, considered, extremism may be at times justifiable. But that's a hell of a rare commodity.

If everybody's cool tomorrow I can get my thread presence back to investments and out of the barrel of a gun. I'll drop in now and then.

Trying to maintain a sense of humour,

Steve

Damn, I spoke too soon. They're ignoring the court decision: group A has announced that they will enter the zone and take control, supported by armed police and military forces. Group B has sworn to prevent this "at all costs". Several hundred well-armed on either side. Showtime is tomorrow AM. I won't be anywhere near it - I'll be 50 miles north, snorkeling over good coral and grilling a fish or two. Might extend to the weekend. If this is force majeure, I'll make the most of it.

Gotta say, though, that the idea of citizens using arms to settle their differences with government is less attractive in practice than in theory. I've noticed that while the people using the arms inevitably feel that the cause is right, just, and far too noble to be lost through squeamishness, the people that get caught in the middle often find matters to be a good deal less pressing.

Just my $.02. I'm outta here. I don't think it'll get too crazy, but if it does, catch us on CNN. Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Philippines.
