<<NEW YORK, June 30 (Reuters) - Issuance of straight corporate debt totalled $213.7 billion in the second quarter, according to research firm Securities Data Company.

The figure excludes mortgage and asset-backed debt.

The investment-grade sector saw $181.6 billion in offerings in the second quarter, topping last year's second quarter issuance of $123.9 billion, and bringing the total for the first half to $380.4 billion.

Merill Lynch & Co. was the top underwriter for investment-grade issues, underwriting a total of $49.1 billion in offerings via 322 issues, Securities Data said.

In the first half, the high-yield sector saw $99.8 billion in new offerings (public and private placements), compared with $48.2 billion in the same period last year, Securities Data said.

In the high-yield sector, Donaldson Lufkin and Jenrette was the top underwriter. The firm underwrote $15.9 billion in junk bond deals via 84 issues, the research firm said. >>
