Yes, that is a valid and useful way to look at it with the proper qualifications as you have listed them giving a new investor some data to figure a time adjusted risk to reward to arrive at his own valuation. The typical thread hype is suited to short term traders with manipulative intentions and naive wishful thinkers who should let a trust department at some conservative bank handle their money(and I wouldn't wish that on anyone, anyone), IMO. Good luck to all patient investors with realistic objectives! <$$$
