I can't necessarily argue that zip will replace the floppy, but I do think that the zip has the chance create a whole new segment, where in fact it is the standard.

Originally there were 5 1/4s, then came hard drives that grew from 20mb to 20gb, while floppies have only gone from 300k to 1.44mb.
Zip fits the middle nicely, and OEM agreements like Compaq are the key to getting to critical mass, if it ever will happen.

As for new copycats: Who? Imation missed the zip boat, so they have sunk a bundle into ls-120, which CPQ has abandoned. What other media player makes sense?

Sony, Maxell and Fujitsu all license the technology anyway, so I am sure unauthorized copies would violate the heck out those contracts.
Besides which, if I am not mistaken, the company that sold the equipment to Nomai was slapped with an injunction not to sell to anyone not authorized by IOM. That is why Nomai's capacity was limited.
