>>Alcohol causes even more damage to mind and body, should we outlaw alcohol?<<

Isn't society grand in it's inperfection? Alcohol use and legalization has gained societal acceptance, of course from the overthrow of prohibition. So the society of the 20's demanded the use of alcohol be legal and we are still living that legacy today. If Alcohol was just now discovered as a new recreational drug it would be treated just like cocaine or any other illegal drug. It is treated quite harshly by the capital system. If you get a DUI, your insurance will go up. But all of us suffer from loss of property and loss of life due to drunk drivers. So alcohol is having similar effects on society as other drugs. I don't think it should be made illegal because it has historcial societal acceptance.

Obesity is a medical/geneology issue. It is not caused by eating butter.

>>Almost all the societal problems you attribute to drug use are largely the result of the criminalization of drugs.<<

A guy gets stoned every night and comes to work with a numb mind and as a result cuts off his hand in a power saw. His employer, the workmans comp. insurance providor, long tern disability all pay for this guy and as a member of society so do we. That has nothing to do with the legalality of the drug. A Father smokes crack and can't hold a job. His children go ignored as he has no interest in them. The children without a stable male parent may very well may grow up without the necessary skills to be productive members of society. They may be fine too, granted, but this is not always the case. Once again has nothing to do with illegality.

What is often overlooked in the decriminalization argument is just how well our capitalist society works. The present rate of drug use is achieved with zero marketing. Allow a company to profit from marijuana and they will market, package and promote the use of it to new unbelievable hieghts.
