Motorola Announces Standards-Based, Dedicated Wireless
Data Solution; Private DataTAC Version 2.0 Features
IP-Based Networking, Enhanced System Security and Large
System Support

June 30, 1998

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via NewsEdge
Corporation -- Motorola's Worldwide Data Solutions
Division (WWDSD) today introduced its first industry
standard, IP-based wireless data networking solution.
Private DataTAC(TM) 2.0 is a dedicated wireless data
network offering that features an industry standard,
Internet Protocol (IP)-based networking interface,
enhanced system security and large system support.

Private DataTAC 2.0 now offers customers new
advanced wireless data features and services.
Backwards compatibility with key features of previous
system releases is maintained so that existing customers
can upgrade without having to revamp or replace their
existing system. New features of Private DataTAC 2.0
include:

-- Industry Standard Interfaces--Users now have the
flexibility to

choose both customized and "off-the-shelf" applications
that are

written to an industry-standard interface.
Implementation and

integration of applications can now be made easier,
faster and

more cost-effectively. -- IP Networking--Facilitates the
wireless extension of an

organization's enterprise network by providing standard
IP

message routing between LAN-based host computers.
Private

DataTAC services include unit-to-unit roaming,
group/broadcast

messaging and IP header/data compression. Data
compression can

effectively increase channel capacity by reducing the
size of the

message transmission. -- Enhanced System
Security--Private DataTAC's software-based

encryption, user-based authentication and over-the-air
key

management security features provide a high level of
protection

against unauthorized network access and message
interception. -- Large Systems Support--Private
DataTAC enables seamless roaming

across broad geographic areas for users with wide-area
and dense

capacity needs. This addresses the requirements of large
and

complex system designs by providing a set of standard,
certified

configurations supporting up to 4 times the previous
capability. -- Network Management--Motorola's
FullVision(TM) Integrated Network

Manager uses a standards-based Simple Network
Management Protocol

(SNMP) that allows a central viewpoint for monitoring
and

controlling the system for quick problem identification
and

resolution.

"The explosive growth of the Internet in recent years
demonstrates the power and potential of a
standards-based approach to wireless connectivity, "
said Greg Townsend, vice president and general
manager of Motorola's Worldwide Data Solutions
Division. "Now customers can have the benefits of a
dedicated, robust wireless data network with the ability
to retain system control, custom design for coverage
and in-building penetration, as well as the integration of
standards-based solutions."

Motorola's Private DataTAC is a dedicated data solution
that combines the industry's fastest wireless data rates
(as high as 19.2 kbps) with a reliable wireless data
protocol (RD-LAP). The solution provides
mission-critical users in public safety, government,
utilities, transportation and other field service
organizations with access to customer database
information while in the field.

Motorola is one of the world's leading providers of
wireless communications, semiconductors and advanced
electronic systems and services. Major equipment
businesses include cellular telephone, two-way radio,
paging and data communications, personal
communications, automotive, defense and space
electronics and computers. Communication devices,
computers and millions of other products are powered
by Motorola semiconductors. Motorola's 1997 sales
were $29.8 billion.

No specific "program" announcements, but they HAVE to be considering it. FTTE is still very costly (about $100K/mile is a figure I recently read), and ADSL will not be a reliable, high capacity business solution for most enterprises, IMO.
