DVD Movie Sales Very Strong At PC Superstores - -June 29, 1998
By Jill Bilzi
Computer superstores are reporting very strong sales of DVD movies, according to a Santa Ana, Calif.-based rackjobber.

Ed Meadows, executive VP at Hi-Val, said his company's sales are growing at a rate of 60% to 70% a month, thanks to fast-moving sales of DVD movies at CompUSA and Computer City. Meadows racks both retailers with DVD-ROM titles and DVD movies, which are being purchased by consumers who own personal computers able to play DVD movies.

"At first, none of us thought that people would watch DVD movies on their PCs," Meadows said. "But, they are, and they're buying them in record numbers."

Hi-Val began racking both Computer City and CompUSA with about 40 titles each last November. Computer City is now increasing its order to 80 titles, while CompUSA is going to 200 titles on July 1 and 800 titles on Labor Day, Meadows said.

The two computer superstores are carrying both DVD movies and DVD-ROM titles, but the DVD movies have far outsold the DVD-ROM software, he said. Meadows attributed the strong sales to the growing base of PCs that play DVD movies as well as the trend toward larger monitors, which provide movies with a better appearance.

For the past month, Meadows said, Boogie Nights has been the best-selling DVD movie at computer superstores.
