Actually I agree that health costs should be paid by the patient. Then he/she will know whether it is worth it to him/her.
And of course buy individual insurance if you want (as we used to do!)
Government is one of the causes of high health care. I discussed this with my doctor: he says that at least 1/3 of the cost of doctor and hospital bills is regulation-based. It may be more but he knew of 1/3.

Scott,
I believe the private sector will be much better at pricing these risk factors than government. The ones who misprice will go out of business and the ones who price correctly will prosper. The government however will be subject to special interest group pleading and always get it wrong.
If you are flabbergasted by what health insurers pay for I'll make two points. First they are highly regulated and it is often the government that is deciding what they must pay. Second check out what Medicare is paying for if you really want to be amazed. What we currently have doesn't come anywhere close to a free market.
Also I see no reason for costs to be shared by the government. THe government has no money other than ours. That is us sharing costs.
Henry

The best answer to the health care mess:
Allow the creation of tax-free savings accounts. Income is placed into the accounts for the sole purpose of paying for ANY medical need or occurrence. Insurance is still allowed, if you choose to purchase it. Employing the savings account is purely voluntary, as is purchasing insurance. HMO's (Hillary's bastard stepchildren) are also perfectly legit...should doctors choose to join them (right now, most doctors don't have much real choice in the matter).
Doctors should be allowed to set their own rates...unless HMOs they belong to set the rates for them...then they have a contractual arrangement.
The government DIDN'T solve the health care "mess" (I didn't see a mess...did anyone else?), it was in the process of solving itself.
What country has the best medicine...so much so that other countries' leaders come here or have doctors flown to them? What country's medicine is so efficient that the much vaunted "Canadian System" ships a large % of their patients to be treated there?

That's right - the US! Who says the market screwed up medicine. Still looks good to me, even in its current state.
