The Buzz
EETimes - June 29, 1998, TechWeb News

Reading Palm: Analyst Jim Turley of the Microprocessor Report suggests
that the Palm Pilot, now in 3Com Corp.'s hands, might have a chance
against the onslaught of Windows CE handheld computers.

A Macintosh-Windows comparison is tempting, as users love the Pilot
and software development companies love the compatibility of Windows
CE.

So the key for the Pilot will be to keep its operating system open
enough to counter Windows' power, Turley wrote in the company's
"Embedded Processor Watch" report. "Keeping its own prices down and
licensing PalmOS would likely fill the market with cost-competitive
spin-offs.

The increased market share could overwhelm Windows CE," Turley wrote.
"Squeezing the maximum profit from each unit, as Apple did, would
leave the back door open for Microsoft's minions to overtake Pilot's
lead."
