Once again let me clarify. All this discussion started with the discussion I was having with Stimpson J. Cat. On his post...

Message 5053997

he eluded to the possibility that ASND's ATM switches with MPLS might encroach upon CSCO's bread and butter - the layer 3 routing/switching market. The deal with MCI I believe is indeed a telco win inasmuch as this conversation was concerned. The question isn't so much who wins the most ATM business (although this is clearly important) but moreso, what are SP's doing to prepare themselves for the upcoming network consolidation. I think most will agree that ATM is a superior transport technology and that ASND has, up to now, won the lions share of this business. ON the edges of these networks we're seeing a continuing deployment of layer 3 routing switches or just routers. Now, the question is where is that line in the sand? Will ATM edge switches encroach on the big edge routers or will the big edge routers encroach on ATM switching. At the same time will CSCO's latest ATM switches also have an impact on purchases of Asnd ATM core product?

I think what we have seen lately is that more and more SP's are indeed considering big routing switches where they once would have certainly opted for ATM switches. In a nut shell this is the discussion I was having with Stimpson. It appears this has been twisted. So, if CSCO wins business with routers versus ASND's ATM/MPLS switches is this considered to not be lost business to ASND? I think this is a valid question to ask.

As for the enterprise spin on the MCI release... I think the fact that MCI is apparently spending billions on this network to support their enterprise customers that it is indeed a SP win. Isn't that what SP's do - purchase networks to support enterprise and consumer customers?

Aaaaaanyway...time to move on. I think we've beaten this horse long enough.
