More from SingTel's website:singtel.com <<< Date: 1 June 1998 SingTel Launches ATM Service SingTel launched its Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) service to complement its existing suite of private network services for businesses. With this new service, business customers who need high bandwidths for their communications can enjoy cost savings of at least 10% when compared to existing leased-based solutions. SingTel ATM is available islandwide in Singapore, and internationally to Japan and USA. SingTel has also signed a bilateral agreement with its partner AT&T to establish a second 45Mbps link to the USA. This T3 link will carry commercial traffic from 1 September 1998. Mr Lim Shyong, Senior Vice President for Global Services, said, "SingTel is the only telecommunications service provider in the Asia Pacific to offer both international and domestic ATM service. Given the extensive reach within Singapore and its potential to reach major business centres worldwide, this latest ATM technology service will offer cost effective solutions to support our business customers'telecommunications needs." ATM technology enables multimedia transmissions of voice, data, image and video signals at speeds of up to 155 megabits per second. At the same time, ATM technology optimizes networks by enabling bandwidth to be shared dynamically among many users for multiple applications over a single integrated platform. SingTel's ATM service is targeted at large corporations, MNCs and regional hubs who want the flexibility of subscribing to lower bandwidth which have the capability to "burst" at high capacity instead of a fixed high bandwidth which they may fully utilize only at particular times. Mr Victor Kwok, Managing Director for Business Communications Development, said, "With SingTel ATM, bandwidth can now be provided "on demand", depending on the customers' requirements. The network is used much more efficiently and cost of network resources are reduced significantly, and this means cost savings for our customers. With ATM complementing SingTel's existing range of services such as international leased circuits and frame relay, we are able to extend to our customers a range of service and price plans that will better suit their traffic requirements." The two service classes that are offered in the initial phase are Constant Bit Rate (CBR), which caters to delay-sensitive applications like voice and video, and Variable Bit Rate-non-Real Time (VBR-nRT), which is suitable for "bursty" non-time sensitive traffic and high speed Internet access. >>>> List of company services:singtel.com ADSL branded as Magix:magix.com.sg
