First this is SCREAMINGLY ILLEGAL. And second brokerages are BROKERS they don't manage money, they BROKER for their clients.

Amerindo owns 4 million plus shares of vantive, of course it makes sense to buy 50,000 or 100,000 shares at the close of the quarter to mark up a $110 million dollar position that's down to $84 million by 10%! they get to charge their investors a larger management fee based on the fund price as of june 30th and they get to show better performance. the same spike happened at the end of the day on sebl.

(Of course it may not have been amerindo, but they're a good example as the largest holder.)
