Penni, I for one don't think that you are a racist. Far from it!! But I do think that the bilingual education initiative in California had racist overtones. The parents of children who have not yet learned English certainly did not vote for it. And I definitely do not agree with Duncan's comment that supporting bilingual education makes one a racist, which is what I was responding to, with an opposite.

Bilingual programs need to be as short as possible to be effective. And, in the same way that children who are failing need special attention, children who are not learning English in an appropriate time frame need additional help.

All the sides here are at least saying that children need English in order to succeed. But without basic skills like math taught effectively at age appropriate levels, they could end up eventually speaking English and not having all the other things you need to do well in America.
