New Jersey Driver's License info.

Thanks to Lou on RMTR thread #reply-5068682 for finding this link... the bill for creating the smartcard driver's license in the Great State of New Jersey.

Racom will not bid this project because it is not a contactless smartcard. It appears New Jersey wants everything on this card except contactlessness -- if there is such a word. It is my understanding Racom has the only multi-application smartcard solution available to date. I submit the Great State of New Jersey will experience considerable delay in deploying the system as planned.

SUMMARY STATEMENT: The card would contain a digitized photograph and signature, and serve as a 10- year driver's license. The card also would be utilized by New Jersey residents for such other governmental and private services as may be approved or authorized by the State Treasurer. Serving as a unified driver's license, the AccessNJ card would replace the various separate licenses and endorsements currently required of boat, motorcycle, omnibus, school bus and commercial operators. The AccessNJ card also will function as an identification card for those persons who do not drive, but who require some form of State issued identification, including those under the legal driving age. The card would permit citizens, at their option, to gain access to other governmental and private services approved and authorized by the State Treasurer.

The AccessNJ program is to be implemented over a four-year period beginning July 1, 1999. The bill does not alter current driver's license expiration dates, nor does it invalidate current driver's licenses. The fee for the basic 10-year driver's license would be $35, or $3.50 per year. This proposed fee represents a $0.50 reduction in the annual cost of a driver's license. In addition, the bill eliminates the current $2 fee charged for a photograph on the license. Fees for endorsement and licenses, other than the basic driver's license, would be set by regulation.
