Will Y2K Cause a Global Recession?????????????

Will Y2K Cause A Global Recession?

SUSIE GHARIB: 8 points sure is animated. You're right Paul. Well, a leading expert on the Year 2000 computer problem says there's a 70 percent chance it could cause a global recession a year from now. That's what Ed Yardeni, chief economist at Deutsche Morgan Grenfell is saying today. A year ago, he put the odds at just 30 percent. Yardeni also sees danger signs ahead for the stock market.

EDWARD YARDENI, CHIEF ECONOMIST, DEUTSCHE MORGAN GRENFELL: I do believe the Year 2000 problem has the potential for creating a bear market. And now my most likely scenario is that we'll see a 30 percent drop in stock prices sometime in 1999.

GHARIB: Well, Yardeni says that he's disappointed by the lack of global government and industry leadership in tackling the Y2K problem.
