"We are on the edge of such an amazing 21st Century," Gingrich said after meeting with a group of technology executives in the offices of data networking company 3Com Corp. (NASDAQ:COMS). During a brief press conference, Gingrich ran through a list of policies on his agenda that are being closely watched in Silicon Valley, and used the occasion to take a few swipes at the Clinton Administration. "The Clinton Administration frankly is behind the curve on the Year 2000 problem," said Gingrich, who said he hopes to have a House bill by this fall that would "lay out the ground rules" for Year 2000 litigation, and limit frivolous lawsuits. Gingrich also said he was "deeply committed" to extending the R&D tax credit, and to increasing visa quotas on technology professionals entering the U.S. Gingrich's meeting was organized by the local political action committee, Technology Network, a bipartisan group that was formed a year ago to help build the industry's political clout across the country in Washington.
