Sony, Others To Standardize Mobile Internet Devices

TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony and four other Japanese companies said today they had agreed to set up a forum in October to draw up standards for mobile information equipment that connect to the Internet.

Sony, IBM Japan, a Japanese unit of IBM, Pioneer Electronics, Honda Motor and Mazda Motor will set up a preparatory committee in July and seek to attract members from various industries, the companies said in a joint statement.

The forum will seek to standardize formats for the hardware and communications system for Internet services provided through mobile information equipment such as car navigation systems and personal digital assistants, it said.
