**OT** Charles : Shotgun as a home defense weapon.

Charles - your mail implies that the lightest load possible is BB
Not True!

You also weren't definite about wall materials or range, both critical factors.

MHO regarding suitable load for home defense...

First - anticipated combat arena
Apartment with 2 residents. My major concern is minimising penetration.
Anticipated range - 7 yards.

Weapon : 20 gauge (less recoil than a twelve gauge) 18 inch barrel.

So...
My recommended load is birdshot, the smaller the better. If you doubt
the efficacy, then shoot a bleach bottle full of water at 7 yards. A good choice is Winchester Dove & Quail load (1 ounce Number 7 1/2 shot); but you have to test shoot loads from different manufacturers to see what works best with your weapon of choice.

If you have the chance, check it out.

You can repeat the experiment with a dummy wall fabricated to the construction codes in your area. Check out codecheck.com for info on dry wall construction.
A wall will typically have a laminate of 5/8" type X Gypsum : 3 1/2" rolled insulation : 5/8" type X Gypsum on each side. You might be surprised.
