Desktop software may take 2-3 years to catchup, but I suspect server software will be available upon the release of the processor. There are many versions of UNIX that are already being ported to Merced (HP-UX, and Solaris for example), that will hopefully be ready at the time of introduction.

Merced will be used in high end servers and workstations. Concurrent software development is underway already so it's probably safe to assume that sales will start upon availability of the chip.
