Inprise Named Among Top Enterprise Vendors by Software Magazine
Company's JBuilder and Delphi Development Tools Also Earn Prominent Industry Awards
July 1, 1998 07:30 AM
SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Software Magazine, the leading monthly publication for senior information technology managers and enterprise software professionals, has recognized Inprise Corporation INPR as a premier provider of enterprise-class application development tools in its annual 'Software 500' listing of top corporate software vendors.
In presenting Inprise with the 'Editor's Choice Award' for application development, the magazine said, "Inprise's goal today is to provide tools and middleware geared toward the development of distributed enterprise-class applications...Corporate sales now account for two-thirds of the company's sales -- up from just 10% two years ago...In March, Inprise strengthened its middleware position by acquiring Visigenic Software and its VisiBroker object request broker. And the company recently unveiled plans to offer a full line of professional services for corporate customers, including training and consulting."
John Melka, a senior systems engineer at Nations Bank in Chicago and a user of Inprise's InterBase, Delphi, and JBuilder software is also quoted in the article as saying, "We have had a nice progression from client/server to three-tiered computing using the tools we get from Inprise." In the past 20 months, Inprise has announced a number of significant partnerships, acquisitions and corporate changes to reflect the company's transition from a developer of desktop software applications to a leading vendor in the growing corporate market for products and services used to build and manage large-scale, or "Enterprise" software systems. Recently, LAN Times magazine devoted a cover story to Inprise's emergence as an enterprise vendor and featured an interview with Delbert W. Yocam, Inprise chairman and CEO. JBuilder & Delphi Awards
In addition to the corporate recognition, Inprise's Borland family of enterprise development tools has also received a number of recent industry awards and outstanding product reviews. The company's Borland JBuilder was selected as the industry's best Java development environment by both VARBusiness and BYTE magazines, while JBuilder and Borland Delphi were named among the top 100 software products of the year by Windows Magazine. Below are excerpts from these articles:
VARBusiness: JBuilder is "The Total Toolkit" for Value-Added Resellers Interested in Java
In its April 13 issue, the editors of VARBusiness tracked VAR reaction to Java development and the first version of JBuilder by reporting, "In this hectic environment, VARBusiness' Product Report, a telemarketing survey of 99 VARs about Java toolkit features and vendors, rates Borland JBuilder the hands-down No. 1 Java toolkit solution with an overall score of 57.2, more than three points ahead of the nearest contender...The speed of version 2.0 of JBuilder (which is shipping now) has improved considerably. The program was rated first by VARs for size and speed of compiled code with a score of 7.7. The other contenders lagged here, with Symantec garnering a 7.0 and SunSoft coming in third with a 6.7. Microsoft came in last, netting 6.4 points." [http://www.techweb.com/se/directlink.cgi?VAR19980413S0024]
BYTE Magazine Names JBuilder "BYTE BEST for Java Development Tools"
"JBuilder stands out because it's fast, crisp, and built around ASCII text. These are the hallmarks that made Borland's Turbo Pascal so popular, and they should serve Java programmers well. JBuilder's compiler is very fast and well integrated with the debugger. This makes it easy to compile, tweak, test, and repeat again and again," BYTE said in its May 1998 issue.
Delphi & JBuilder Named to Windows Magazine "Win100"
In their special Summer 1998 issue, Windows Magazine's editors said, "Delphi 3's stunning rapid application development environment and superior capabilities for building ActiveX controls and Web-centric applications make it an IDE worth checking out. The Client/Server Suite includes new database drivers for Informix, DB2 and AS/400 data sources; updated SQL links drivers for InterBase, Microsoft's SQL Server, Oracle and Sybase; and server-based 'brokers' for (distributed) data integrity and business rules.
"JBuilder is a visual two-way Java development environment that uses JavaBeans as its core component. Its RAD environment's application browser, project manager, code editor, property editor, HTML viewer, graphical debugger and compiler are all integrated and automatically synchronized. Wizards help you quickly generate Java code for common software elements, and a rich component gallery makes it relatively simple to add complex functionality. It also has a lightning-fast compiler and excellent support for creating JavaBeans from scratch. Client/Server Suite adds compelling enterprise database features."
