<<have never read one of those adds at the top. >>
I was thinking about the same the other day. I use Yahoo for quotes and never look at the ads on the top. I wonder if anyone really looks at these ads. For sure, SI attracts mostly tech savvy or investment savvy, who are least likely to be enticed by this type of ads. BTW, I haven't seen posts from your friend LS in a while. What have you done to him? -g-

Hi rrman; What ads on top? They must be pretty
subliminal, cause I never noticed them.

Here goes another day of trading. Slowly I seem to
be learning my lessons, most of them painfully.

re advertising: the advertising is (1) intended to be subliminal,
(2) targeted to a narrow audience of users who tend to be male, age 30-50, six figure income and average net worth of seven figures, (or wannabe traders who get wiped out with margin calls). The high net worth nature of SI readers gives expectations that there will be a reasonable return on advertising revenue. My guess is that the actual readership is much higher than the number of people posting here. The brokerages, M&A guys, and management insiders can't post but most certainly read SI looking for rumors and investor sentiment..
If you look at the Internet as a business, the best two ways to get a profit is by charging user fees or via advertising revenue, just like the daily newspaper charges you when you buy the paper and also charges the advertisers. It's possible to run a profitable newspaper on advertising revenue alone. So I expect the survivors of the Internet wars will be the ones who master the use of advertising content without making it seem too offensive to the users.
