S&P Upgrades Acclaim Entertainment Shares to Accumulate

NEW YORK, Jul. 01 (Standard & Poor's) - Standard & Poor's upgraded shares of Acclaim Entertainment (AKLM) to accumulate from hold.

Acclaim Entertainment is a worldwide publisher and developer of software for Nintendo, Sony, Sega and personal computer hardware systems. The company also publishes comic books, operates motion capture studios, and distributes a variety of entertainment software from other publishers worldwide.

Analyst Brian Goodstadt said the company's third quarter earnings per share of $0.09, up from a year-earlier per share loss of $1.40, were well above expectations. Revenues rose 76% from last year's fourth quarter and 5% sequentially. He said AKLM is successfully broadening its product line for different platforms and developing strong franchise brand names. He expects new titles to be released in the fourth quarter, followed by 45-50 titles in fiscal 1999 (Aug.).

Goodstadt said cost-cutting efforts are having a positive impact, and noted that the industry continues to benefit from cheaper hardware. He raised his fiscal 1998 earnings per share estimate to $0.24 from $0.18 and said the stock is attractive at only 0.7 times estimated calendar 1998 revenues per share.
