Yes, this is fairly old news. The ATM network was actually won by Cascade
pre-merger. I'm not aware that they are using this infrastructure for IP traffic however.
It's my understanding that this is a backbone for their FR and ATM traffic...a network
which is front ended by the Cisco/StrataCom edge switches.

Once again, AT&T is proposing to carry our IP traffic over Ascend switches. I just had a teleconference with them a few days ago, and that's what they were proposing. We also have several DS-3-sized PVC's which are now being supported by Ascend ATM switches. This message is likely being brought to you by one of them.

Not quite. Cascade won the frame to ATM interworking business since Cisco/Stratacom couldn't do it. Much later, ASND won the core ATM business. AT&T had a FR network, ATM network and Worldnet IP backbone network. Now they are all running (or migrating to) the ASND core.

I think that in order to make it for the long haul ASND has to either be acquired or will need to add significantly to it's enterprise product offering (layer 3 edge and access products).

Not at all. ASND doesn't want to deal with enterprise. Network Service provider business is much more profitable and palatable, IMHO. There are many, many billions of dollars out there without having to worry about enterprise. ASND is very well positioned to continue to lead in the carrier space. Yes, LU, CSCO, NT and others will be there too. There's room for a lot of people in this pool.
