Chuzzlewit, you make a number of good points in your posting. I guess time will tell how things work out. However, if the other pc manufactures should start such a transition, the Street may view this as a threat to Dell's growth. If this should happen, watch out, here come the downgrades.

To All: Off Topic on Roth IRA Conversion, Does anyone have any thoughts on the question of whether or not to convert an IRA to a Roth?

I was told that if one converts this year the taxes can be spread over the next 4 years. I have run various calculators on the web and it comes up as worthwhile given the parameters I enter (e.g. 20 years to retirement, 15% annual return above inflation (conservative estimate, higher rates of return make it even more attractive), withdraw over 10 years, etc.). I plan to actually retire before that but it is still useful to be able to withdraw at age 59.5 tax-free. The biggest worry is if congress would someday make all IRA's tax-free on withdrawal (hence a waste of money to convert) or if they change the law such that you are taxed on Roth IRAs anyway. The latter is perhaps possible given that the baby-boomer demographic trend will tend to make tax revenues scarce in 20 years. The demographic trend also makes it likely that tax rates will be higher then, which would make the Roth even more attractive if no other laws are changed. Unfortunately the decision relies on guess work given the various unknowns. Does anyone have any advice/comments on this issue?

Regarding Dell, the latest Louis Rukeyser's Stock Newsletter has an interview with Marty Zweig who is recommending Dell and Microsoft in the tech area.

Thanks in advance for any comments on the Roth issue, and best wishes to all.

John
